Is there a free Mac kiosk app?

The honest answer, and why the free ones can’t lock a Mac.

Short version: the genuinely free, well-made kiosk apps are iPad apps, not Mac apps. The best of them is NeatKiosk, and it deserves credit: it is free, with no in-app purchases or subscriptions, actively maintained, and a nice kiosk browser. But it runs on iPad and iPhone (iOS / iPadOS 17 or later), and there is no macOS version.

On an Apple Silicon Mac, the only way an app like that runs at all is through Apple’s "Designed for iPad" compatibility, which runs the iOS app in a window. It is still an iOS app, and it will not run on Intel Macs. That matters because an iOS app lives in the iOS sandbox, with no access to macOS-level input or window control. It structurally cannot block Cmd-Tab, Cmd-Q, Spotlight, Mission Control, Force Quit, the Dock or the menu bar. Those are the exact escape routes a public Mac has to close.

NeatKiosk’s own design confirms this: to actually lock a device down, it relies on Guided Access or MDM Single App Mode. Neither exists on macOS. So on a Mac there is nothing for it to hand the lockdown to.

Put plainly: every free or cheap option in this market is an iPad app wearing a Mac badge. That is not a knock on those apps. They are good at their real job, which is iPad kiosks. They just cannot do the Mac one.

Canned Web, the native Mac option

Canned Web is a native macOS app that does the job an iPad app cannot. Enter a URL, hold ⌘⇧S, and the Mac is sealed fullscreen to that site, with Spotlight, Cmd-Tab, Cmd-Q and screenshots blocked, navigation locked to your domain, and auto-start back into the site after a reboot. It does this with a system event tap and macOS-level controls that only a native app can use. It is not free, but there is a 14-day free trial, and then a one-time €49 per machine, no subscription.

Free Mac kiosk app, FAQ

Is there a free Mac kiosk app?
Not really. The genuinely free, well-made options, like NeatKiosk, are iPad and iPhone apps, not Mac apps. On a Mac they can only run as an iPad app under Apple’s "Designed for iPad" compatibility, and an iOS app can’t block the macOS escape routes (Cmd-Tab, Spotlight, Force Quit, the Dock). There is no full-featured free native Mac kiosk app. Canned Web is paid (one-time €49 per machine) but genuinely native, with a 14-day free trial.
Is NeatKiosk good?
Yes, for iPad and iPhone. It is free, actively maintained, and a nice kiosk browser on iOS and iPadOS. It simply has no macOS version, and it relies on Guided Access or MDM Single App Mode to lock the device down, neither of which exists on macOS.
Why can’t an iPad app lock a Mac?
iOS apps run in the iOS sandbox, with no access to macOS-level input or window control. So they cannot intercept Cmd-Tab, Cmd-Q, Spotlight, Mission Control, Force Quit, the Dock or the menu bar. Locking a Mac needs a native app that can reach those layers, which is what Canned Web does with a system event tap and private macOS calls.
Can I run a free iPad kiosk app on my Mac?
Only on Apple Silicon Macs, and only as an iPad app in a window (Apple’s "Designed for iPad"). It will not run on Intel Macs, and even on Apple Silicon it cannot seal macOS itself.
Is Canned Web free?
It has a 14-day free trial with the full app, then a one-time €49 per machine. No subscription.
